PFLAG Columbia sent a box of winter scarves for homeless LBGT youth at the Chicago LGBT Community Center “The Center on Halsted”

Subject: Oh My!

Linda,

I am totally overwhelmed by the contents of the box! I just can't believe how beautiful everything is and the sweet note you added to the packages. It's just so amazing and thoughtful. They are going to love these things.

Really, it's incredible. We want to send pictures of youth wearing the items if we can. In most cases we can't take an identifiable picture but I think we can be creative and take pictures that will still protect individual privacy.

Thank you so much for coordinating the Columbia PFLAG group and please let them know that we received the box and that we are TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY.

Warmest Regards,Serena Worthington

Open Column by Carla Snellen

Editor, the Tribune: I am an American. I am proud of this country and have an American flag flying at my home. I pay taxes and obey the laws. I pray for our nation and for its leaders and exercise my right to vote. I believe in God and endeavor to live by Matthew 22:37-40. Yet I am being referred to as "the biggest threat to America," greater even than terrorism. Because I am gay. . .

Progress report:

1. The Central Chapter of the Missouri Association for Social Welfare has started work on a public event featuring the importance of anti-bullying efforts in schools. A similar event was sponsored by the city of Columbia last year; I plan to be in touch with the person who organized it.

2. I’m scheduled to talk with a couple Columbia people about ways to increase business support for the LGBT community. We’ll take up the idea of honoring businesses that practice non-discrimination.

Million Penny Drive

The Center Project has just started a new fundraising campaign…
the Million Penny Drive, which will go from February until May 1.

Here's the concept---Most people have loose change (e.g. pennies) that they hold in their car or home & they would be willing to donate. One million pennies is $10,000.  This will help the Project reach their 2007-08 fundraising goal of $72,000.

The Project will collect pennies at all TCP events held during this period including Earth Day. They have asked PFLAG to help in this effort to collect pennies.  Therefore, we’d like to encourage everybody to consider donating all their loose pennies… bring them to the meetings on March 6th and again on April 3rd.  There will be a penny collection can at the meeting.   Thanks, let’s all dig in and help TCP with this most worthy project!!

from Linda Hayes:

The Mid-MO LGBT Coalition's Faith Based Outreach committee in conjunction with the Open Doors Ministry of the Missouri United Methodist Church in Columbia Missouri embarked on a cooperative endeavor to convince the Rag Tag Theater to show the award winning film, For The Bible Tells Me So

IT WORKED!!

Rag Tag showed the documentary on November 29/30.

For The Bible Tells Me So.

Through the experiences of five very normal, [what is "normal" anyway?? -webmaster]  American families of faith-- including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopalian Bishop Gene Robinson -- we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech,

FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.

FTBTMS WINS 9TH FESTIVAL AWARD!

FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO was recently awarded Best Documentary Jury Prize by the 2007 Tampa International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. This latest award is the ninth festival award the film has won since its world premiere at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival in January. Other awards include The Katherine Bryan Edwards Prize for Human Rights at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, and Best Documentary Audience Awards at Seattle, Provincetown, and Festivals. FTBTMS has also won Best Documentary Audience Awards at Outfest: the LA Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, the Fresno Reel Pride Festival, and ImageOut: the Rochester Lesbian & Gay Film Festival.

PFLAG Jefferson City  Update 2/18/08

* Anti-Bullying: MASW Central Chapter has agreed to cosponsor a public meeting on the importance of anti-bullying programs in area schools. I would like to recruit support from Missouri NEA (which has an anti-bullying program), JC Multicultural Forum, area PTAs, JC Human Relations Commission, Lincoln U, etc.

* Non-discrimination: still moving toward an ad campaign that thanks businesses for having non-discrimination policies.

* Allied Organizations in Mid-Missouri. The JC Multicultural Forum has always publicly supported LGBT efforts by allowing the Coalition to have a booth at its Festival. Leadership has indicated an interest in being more intentional in building acceptance. The Missouri Association for Social Welfare (MASW) has been open minded but not particularly active on LGBT issues. As chair of the Central Missouri Chapter, I can make sure our concerns are given a higher priority.  For anyone in the LGBT community who is concerned about attracting unwanted attention but wants to be active in changing society, these are good groups to get involved in.
